Martin Luther: On the Jewish Faith

Dublin Core

Title

Martin Luther: On the Jewish Faith

Subject

Reformation

Description

Martin Luther’s Das Jhesus Christus Ain Geborner Judeley was meant to inspire Christian tolerance toward people of Jewish faith. While the original date of publishing is 1523, the specific copy viewed was printed in 1524 in Wittenberg, Germany.

The book as a whole included very few illustrations, which were used only to section off what seemed like different chapters. This illustration is interesting because it depicts a religious scene, which includes cherub angels and deer. The image was likely included to maintain a certain ethos with the reader, and insist (indirectly) that his words were not a rejection of religion, but rather something that should directly concern people of the church and Christian faith.
